Hi, I just see lot's of people on the internet who speak both english and Dutch and wonder why that is? Is it because it's an easy language for those who want a second or because of something else?

Dutch uses a lot of english and french words.  It isn't really that easy to speak it, but Holland is very connected to technology and everyone learns to read and write English in school.

The Dutch learn English from age 7-8 in school, so they are usually very good at speaking English from an early age. I also seem to remember being told that the north part of Holland can receive the BBC signal from England, so they tend to watch that too...

Here in Denmark they learn English from an early age too, now starting from 7-8 years old too. I am sometimes amazed at how many kids can speak fluent english!

I have been living in Denmark for 10 years (Moved from England) and haven't met many that can't speak fluent english!

All languages are 'easy' if you get experience of them early enough. Language acquisition is so acute in the first 3 to 5 years that children can not only develop fluency in any number of languages that they are exposed to but also synthesise a 'private' language without any apparent difficulty in distinguishing one from the others. Sadly this ability declines markedly with age and where languages are not taught until 11+ (as here in the UK) it is very much the rarity to find fluent speakers. Attempts to learn languages in adulthood are almost always doomed to failure or mediocre success.

I must be one of the lucky ones... I speak and write fluent Danish (learnt through my 20's), and where as most brits that are here in denmark and speak the language have a very strong accent, I have been told I speak the same accent as the area I am living in...

Pretty proud of that :)
