Should LockerGnome.NET's OSQA have new users not allowed to link?

I have opened this "question" more as a discussion.

I hope we can just have a nice collaborative discussion about the spam that comes on.

I am putting forwards that new users should NOT be able to hyper link sites.

90% of the time it is new users that are bots. They come on and post in old questions magically with a link..... You never see them again after this.

What this is is bots spamming links to get higher PR on search engines. It needs to stop.

One way of this to "help" is to stop new users positing hyper links.

They can still post the link but it won't work as a hyper link so would not be helping them.

So too keep this a question. Do you think Lockergnome should implement this? And how much Karma is a "new user" before they become a full member?

As of right now, OSQA does not have a setting on the site to disable profile bio and user website on their profile. I am looking at all of the admin settings to see if we can do anything. Also, lockergnome and OSQA are working on getting a way to prevent spammers (it is one of the hot topic on meta.osqa.net http://meta.osqa.net/search/?q=spam&Submit=search&t=question)

As of right now, I am going to test something that may help, but I am not too sure if it will ultimately end the issues.

that really dont matter since 99% of anyone uses there bio and  of all places that is where you should list your sebsite in your bios :)

most modern message board allow for signature line  as well were  you can put a email and web address , is ther esomething the 9 and 12 year old kids have on there websites that they feel is a huge threat to the forum ??

The problem is that the area is used as a way to link to their website, resulting in spam and trying to gain pagrank in a term that violates the pagerank services.

Also the problem is not with 9 to 12 year olds. It concern with moderate/large sized companies using it to spam the hell out of the form and bashing other companies in the forum also. (I had one company [Note: that Chris highly likes that had a testimonial on their product] get bashed on this site and after talking with them at Macworld, they said that a company was doing the same tasks in many places).

ehh page rank don't work like that  never has anyone who has ever really read web hosted  knows that... true enough getting your link on the index of another site will shift the web crawler to your site how ever  the first link it hits is all that get crawled on the page  sites like this one which run banner advertising on top have to take care of  there page rank in meta tag  which I'm sure is done very well on this site since  if it wasn't you would be sending the  crawler to add choice..

i would exspect the kids here playing  web master to understand that but any mid size business or company  surely does :)

and I would think if you are going to not sure why a company would come with a product testimonial to  the questions and answer forum of locker gnome with it rather then lockergnome.com but if they are going to post such on a forum of this nature they sure had better be as ready for the critics of there product as well as the one who praise it ...

lockergnome.com has implemented spam protection on the site. Unfortunately, Lockergnome.net does not have a way for us to implement spam protection without a whole lot of redoing and possible moving.

I have been here a while lot of it is not bots at all..

this site attracts load of young kids many who don't know better then just  think this is the way to get a few more hit  on a web site for there pay per click  advertising ...

thing is this site is very quick to just on the lock close thread and suspend way to quick for that matter ..

this account I am using now was just released from suspension after just over 2 months I assume for being a bot and posting in older messages  I can assure you I am not a bot . teach younger people the right way don't bully them and suspend them lock there threads give them some honest advice lead them  yes a bit by the hand thats what most young people are looking its the new users that are the life blood of web sites and chat forum without that they grow old fast and fade away ..

any how just my opinion

No, absolutely not. I hate trolls and spamming as much as the next guy but no. I'm opposed to anymore Draconian rules, like for example needing more than 100 karma or so to post a pic or so on so forth. Loosen up a bit. I mean I've always felt right at home here, and I think having this discussion is making people uncomfortable to come here, to feel at home. If they have to post a link, yes let them, but we have people to check if it's legit. I'm sure you wouldn't like it if you made an account now and couldn't post a link to answer a person's question.

That's my rant of the day.

Okay boss but it's just not practical, if we want our community to grow we can't hinder it anymore. As I said I'm opposed to any more draconian rules

That's what the role of "A site editor" is for. Throw away the spam and move on. It's going to be there regardless. If you were the only person in charge of cleaning up the spam, then I could understand, but as a community we have to work together to clean it up.

Exactly, I agree with you. If we're site editors, it's our duty to clean up the spam.

rather then  restricting legitimate users to the board go out and look for the advertising software and the person people that are responsible for it that added lockergnome.net to there list..

up till a few years ago I was a web site designer programer and lots of these low cost web hosting and domain hosting sites offered not only services they charge for to get you listed on the top search engines and web crawlers , another of the services was a program you could write a short ad for your web store, business or website and it  promised  the program would get you listed on thousand of related classifieds and related forums some were free some  would charge ..
nk ads daily and weekly over and over ..

thing is they were not picky  they mass loaded forum and classified URLs in to there program so these bot programs  can dump tons of junk ads every day all over the net, many of the more well know board software now have built in guards to prevent being spammed by bot some use capcha some use other methods ..

you could use the good ole fasioned method and go on a hunt for the programer and ask them to remove the URL for your message board for the good it will do you ..

when you are the mod or user of a forum that suddenly starts to be plagued with junk this is almost always  whats behind it ..

what I find funny is that this forum uses facebook as authentication  in place of registration and then shocked when they get spammed facebook the home of spam people actually subscribe to it  on face book hahaha

facebook make the claim of having  the largest network on the web in some ways this could have ben true at some point in it very early days but since the ap games were added the number trick on face book is for a group of family and friends to get together playing a game each makes upwards of 10 different facebook account all subscribed to the same games then they all share the passwords to the extra accounts in order to advance in the games this has ben going on  there since 2008 and is very well known practice thnose not using bots use the multiple account method i believe in the gaming world the the name for this is mule accounts  ..

facebook is one of the few social net work sight with out a true Identification process even google uses a phone number and make a call witha verbal code to  go back on there site and type in ..

Full member, half member separation heading users to collect karma soon.

For questions, there would be walk-around answers more than directs ones. I personally dislike that.

We already have nice set of administrators and moderators. They'll doing great job here already I can see. And I haven't noticed nothing any problem yet in these process.

Thanks to Chris Pirillo; this is the best Q&A site I found.

As of right now, OSQA does not have a system like that. They only have administrator, moderator, and users (functionality varies based on karma)
