2) ***Hypermiling*** is the act of driving using techniques that maximize fuel economy. Those who practice these techniques are referred to as "hypermilers."
Hypermiling is defined by the New Oxford American Dictionary as the attempt to maximize gas mileage by making fuel-conserving adjustments to one's vehicle and one's driving techniques.
In 2008, the word hypermiling was selected as the best new word of the year by New Oxford American Dictionary.
Hypermiling, which can be practiced in any vehicle regardless of its fuel economy, has gained in popularity as a result of the rise in gasoline prices during the 2000s. While common techniques can be carried out by average motorists making minor changes in their driving habits, many hypermilers use more advanced techniques, some of which are illegal in most if not all jurisdictions. ... more

1) Go the speed limit the slower the speed the lower the gas consumption
2) Don't use your a/c
3) Take your foot off the gas as much as possible (Ex: When your in front of a red light)
4) If you have your own business you are able to write it off on your taxes

"Don't use your car." is not a practical choice for most people. Not everyone lives in an area where bicycling or public transportation is an option. As mentioned in a previous answer, I use Hypermiling when possible and it does create a saving in gas. Also make sure to maintain your vehicle. Changing oil, correct tire pressure, tune ups, keeping as little as possible in the trunk and even keeping your car clean all save gas. The main thing is to keep in mind while driving that the gas pedal isn't something that needs to be pressed at all time. There is an area when I go to work where I can coast for half a mile. I don't press the gas for the entire length and maintain the speed limit of 35mph the whole way. When you see a yellow or red light up ahead, remove your foot from the gas and let gravity/friction slow you down. One of the tricks to hypermiling is not allowing the car to stop completely. The right timing and I can go all the way to work, a 20 mile drive, without completely stopping at all.

Drive less, Use A/C at higher speeds as having windows down at highways speeds isn't efficient
dirty air filter
faulty oxygen sensor
thicker oil than used before
could also be spark plugs

Just drink a couple of energy drinks and run to work.
Or if possible, depending on how far you need to travel, get a goped or a moped depending on the distance needed and how fast you need to go. They use significantly less gas.
Or if you don't mind getting a ticket and possibly crashing, you can do drafting when on the highway, it saves gas at the cost of you getting a ticket and possibly getting into a serious accident.
Another option is to teleport by doing the teleportation jutsu like from naruto shimppuden (great anime show :) )

Walk, bicycle or ride public transit whenever possible. This reduces your fuel cost and wear and tear on your vehicle, which costs you money as well.
Carpool -- that way you can split the fuel bill with friends.
Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Check them once a month. Under-inflated tires are both a safety hazard and a major cause of reduced fuel economy in any vehicle.
Don't drive like you're in the Indy 500. Jackrabbit starts waste fuel and just get you to the next stop light a second and a half faster than the other guy. There's no point. Relax. Enjoy the drive.

Seriously, why can anyone use public transportation: bus, train, taxi to travel? Living in developed countries and still don't use what you guys have. In my country only the big cities have something like that, and only the Capital City of San Juan has a train, the less fortunate towns we have to spend a lot on gas and families with 3-4 members need at least 3 cars to do stuff XD, we are lucky that the goverment spend at least in bus transportation for school student :/, having a lot of ways to travel and still asking how to save money on gas XD I hope this opens the mind to some of you.
