Hello all! I built a computer a couple of weeks ago, and I am running Windows XP. The main purpose of the machine is gaming, so I was wondering, should I switch to Windows 7, go to Vista, or stay on XP. I am open to suggestions if anyone has any ideas. Thank you very much!

Windows XP VS Windows Vista = Windows XP

Windows Vista VS Windows 7 = Windows 7

Windows XP VS Windows 7 = Windows 7

Always go for Windows 7 if it's one of your choices! If not then always Windows XP...

If I were you I would move to Windows 7 to make sure you can get the most out of your new computer.

Everyone also seems to have forgotten DX11 that comes with Windows 7, so if the machine is built with gaming in mind that is also something to consider.

I really think you should upgrade to Windows 7, it's really fast, has more options than XP, is very good for gaming, overall, I think Windows 7 is the way to go!

Windows 7 is a big improvement! Windows Vista was horrible and I would never recommend going to that because it would be more of a downgrade then upgrade. Definitely go with Windows 7 because everything about it is great!

It is not about how it "looks".

Yeah I know I was just adding that it also looks great.

If it's for gaming and you have a dual core, less than 4gb of ram, video card, go with WINDOWS XP. If you have a quad core, 4gb ram or more, video card, go with WINDOWS 7.

I dual boot both and one thing I notice in benchmarks and through normal use is pretty much all functionality that is shared between both windows XP and windows 7, windows xp performs those functions better. It is a lighter OS so there is much less to load in order to begin using the functionality.

It is faster to load less

If you have a copy of windows 7 then use it if you need, but if you have XP, then use that. no need to rush out and spend a ton of money in order to do the same exact thing you are doing now, on windows 7.

The only reason I currently have windows 7 is for the direct x 10. I have the same set of programs installed on both windows xp and windows 7 but if I don't plan to run a dx 10 game, i boot into windows xp as it is more responsive, with windows 7 the main limitation is the hard drive, everything is larger and requires more data to be loaded into memory, that delay is noticeable, if you use windows xp for a while then reboot and select windows 7 and boot into that and do the same thing, when you switch that quickly, you notice the reduction in responsiveness, windows 7 tries to counter this problem a little by using superfech (delays the system startup in order to load more items into memory so when you are actually ready to use those features, they will load from memory instead of the hard drive ) what ever superfetch does not cache will feel significantly slower if you compare it to windows xp. if you disable superfetch entirely, windows 7 boots faster but it is much more sluggish.

To me, windows 7 really needs an SSD, I feel as if it was designed around using an SSD in order to get the most out of the OS

If anyone wants to test, simply do this, install a fresh copy of windows xp, then install a fresh copy of windows 7 (dual boot, then use windows xp for about 2 hours, with a focus of more of the OS built in functions. After that, reboot into windows 7 and try doing the same stuff, you will notice that it is sluggish compared to windows xp.

(while my installs are not fresh but I recommend a fresh install because a common problems I have seen on forums where users were saying windows xp was much slower than vista was that those same users where we provided support for, they will have a windows xp with 150 running processes, and every bit of malware they could find then they compare that to a fresh vista install, fresh installs keeps everything on a level playing field)

all in all, there are both good OS, but in my opinion, for what I do, windows xp provides better performance.
