It's for letting through wi-fi signals, metal reflect the signals and is therefore another meaterial must be used to allow the signals to come through well. |

I think it is either the signal or the speaker. I bet it is mostly for signal. |
Apple had a nasty bit of trouble the first time they mixed metal and wireless together with the old Titanium Powerbooks. They learned their lesson, and that black plastic piece shows that. Bror is correct.
