Apple had a nasty bit of trouble the first time they mixed metal and wireless together with the old Titanium Powerbooks. They learned their lesson, and that black plastic piece shows that. Bror is correct.

It's for letting through wi-fi signals, metal reflect the signals and is therefore another meaterial must be used to allow the signals to come through well.

Its to increase your wireless signal just like on the back of the iPad it has a plastic backing (it's the apple on the back)

I think it is either the signal or the speaker. I bet it is mostly for signal.
