Around the <$2000 price range, would it be better to buy a DLSR and a lens or two or a professional camcorder for HD video recording?

There are limitations of both. DSLR have good lenses you can add but there is rolling shutter effects which makes lines look like strings with even some movement (which takes time in Post production) lame audio and more, Hd camcorder also has some problems.

I would go for a Pro HD camcorder and using a 35mm Adapter converter

I have a DSLR (Canon 5D Mk II) and a few lenses and love it. The image quality is insanely great for photos or videos. I have the camera and about 5 lenses, however, the body itself is more than $2k. However, I think the 7D or 60D have video recoding capabilities (also 1080p) and you'd probably get just as good quality. I vote DSLR!

I would go with a professional camcorder, because with a DSLR, they can have great picture quality, but most lack the proper sound hardware and software. This is where a professional camera wins. They have much better dedicated sound receiving hardware. (not just the microphones, the sound card too)
