I would go with AMD, because you they are faster for the price.
My friend is wanting to build a computer, and I've recommended that he uses these basic parts to build his computer. Here is the motherboard. This or this would be the processor that the computer would use (of course you could find different processors to fit the socket). RAM, hard drives, power supplies, and optical drives are pretty much universal, so you aren't going to be spending too much money.
This current configuration (with RAM, HDD, processor, motherboard, and power supply) works out to be about $600. We experimented to see what he would be paying for if he went with an Intel chip, and it would've been like $400 just for the processor and motherboard. That's why I recommend AMD!
