I have a Macbook Pro and am thinking about getting a network external hard drive for my house so I don't have to plug in a portable one when I'm on the couch or something like that. I'm also thinking about getting an Apple TV to stream my itunes videos.

If I want to stream videos that are on a network hard drive through iTunes to an Apple TV, would it have to stream from the drive to the computer, then from the computer to the Apple TV? If so, might I have problems with the transfer speed when streaming full HD videos?

Sorry if this sounds dumb, I admit I'm kind of a noob.

You shouldn't have a problem, since the Apple TV takes content that is streamed from your iTunes profile. Just put all your iTunes Music, Pictures, Movies, etc... on the external drive, then make sure to set that as your iTunes home folder, and you're all set!
