Amazon Whispernet is the name of Amazon's 3G network that is used on it's Kindles. The service is provided by Sprint. I know that when used to download books over 3G, Whispernet is free. When you email documents through Whispernet, it's something like 10 or 15 cents per document. The Kindle also has a web browser. I can't imagine Internet browsing over 3G could be completely free, but I could be wrong. Does anyone know? Thanks.

To my knowledge it is free, they hope to make there money on the books they sell... the web browser is just a perk i guess... i do not own one but my friend does.

I have a Kindle 2i and the 3G internet browsing provided by Sprint is absolutely, 100% free.

However, Amazon's end user agreement is pretty strict. If they suspect that you've been using the Kindle in a way inconsistent with its intended use (i.e. using it to tether, stream music, etc.), then they reserve the right to permanently shut off your service.

Honestly, it's pretty sweet.

Good to know, thanks. I'm looking into getting the 3G Kindle next year. It sounds like a great deal.

A quote from Amazon's website:

Built-in Free 3G connectivity uses the same wireless signals that cell phones use, but there are no monthly fees or commitments—Amazon pays for Kindle’s 3G wireless connectivity. The added convenience of 3G enables you to download books anytime, anywhere, while on the go—without having to find a Wi-Fi hotspot connection. With wireless coverage in over 100 countries and territories, Kindle 3G is a great option for travelers.

Basically it says that Amazon pays for it.
