Hello, I am hoping someone is kind enough to answer this question: I need to know how to safely switch over to an iPhone 4 from an iPhone 3GS, while keeping ALL data from the old phone. I already have the latest iTunes installed and iOS 4.2.1. So, what I need is a simplified "for dummies" step by step guide to the process. One thing that may be a issue is that A am at my summer home and have never synced the iPhone 3GS on this PC before. Any help is greatly appreciated please excuse the lack of grammar for personal reasons. |

Not really sure what you're asking about, but I'll try to answer. First of all, you want to switch to an iPhone 4? I don't know if you can sync a newer iPhone with the data from the older iPhone without setting it up as a new device. Worth a try, I guess, but you can probably find some help on Apple.com/support. However, if you sync it with a new computer you will probably lose everything on the phone. Then you have to move your iTunes library to the new computer in order to get it back. You can't sync a device with two iTunes libraries as far as I know. |

If you want to keep everything including data in 3rd party apps, then you have to restore the new device from the backup of the old device. Definitely do it on the computer you synced your 3gs on. Basically, backup your 3gs on the computer it was synced on (and make sure it's on the latest firmware). Then plug in your new iphone and choose to restore it from a backup. Choose the backup of your 3gs and it will restore the new iphone from that backup. This keeps everything except where your apps are layed out (I think, when I restored my new ipod touch from a backup it didn't keep any folders but that might be because I had to upgrade my new ipod to the latest firmware before restoring from a backup). |

Hello, If I don't misunderstand your meaning, you plan to switch your data to an iPhone 4 from your old iPhone 3GS. If yea, it is troublesome. That's because Apple forbids us to do this in order to protect the copyright. However, don't worry! I heard we can escape from the similar question with an iPhone transfer tool. If you asking about how to transfer data from your 3GS to 4. Meaning that you want to have your iPhone 4 containing whatever is on your 3GS then, you'll have to have it synced on your computer. Then when setting up your iPhone 4, Back up from your previous 3GS sync. |

I should see no reason why you can't do a backup then restore the iPhone 4 from the 3GS backup: I was able to transfer the stuff from my iPhone 3G to my new iPhone 4, so i would have hoped and assumed that it would be as easy as restoring. Also, my photos were brought with the backup. |
