Is there a game that mimics (not necessary identical) EVE Online, and it's not subscription based MMORPG (you don't have to pay to play)

What is the best space simulator (with RPG indentations and besides EVE Online) that you ever played?

Jumpgate is looking good - if it ever gets out of beta....

Best space MMORPG ever: Earth & Beyond. Right up to the minute EA pulled the plug on the servers
