How to make a social network?

The first thing you need, before you even get into anything technical, is an idea. What will make your social network better than any other that already exists? What are you bringing to the table that people will be attracted to? If you're doing it solely for the purpose of making money, you'll run into some obstacles rather quickly. You need something that people will be attracted to for the content, not just another faceless community to put their name on and say they're a part of.

This is true, but the only way these two networks are even making any money is because they have thousands and thousands of people that look at there sight. Well then once they have these eyeballs looking at there sight outside retailers want to advertise on their sight so they pay those sights to put advertisements up. So thats the main thing your going to want to look into to make any money by creating a social network is how do i get thousands of people interested in this.

Well, it's not as easy as it seems to make a lot of money doing this, but there is a chance, and if you want to try, Grou.ps and Ning are the way to do this.

well a social network in general is how people are connected to each other, for example I am friends with lets say David, David is friends with Amy, that means there is a "path" between Amy and I. This concept is rather elementary, that is that Amy is a friend of a friend... now of course if you want to track millions of people, it gets more interesting, you can make guesses as to who knows who based on how connected they are, for example if I have 5 friends who all know amy, there is a chance that I know her too. That's what a social networking site needs to do.

now how to make one... you need to know how to manage a database, and of course you need to be able to have a table of users, with user information, and a table of connections, who is connected to who, if you plan to have millions of people all connected, you may need to optimize it more like break it into different tables on different servers to serve it up faster, because doing a query on a table that is millions of entries long can take some time... details however...

but as CJS7070 said if you want to make money on it, you need to make it better in some way then what is already out there, and you need a clear plan.

the only advice i can give you is that facebook was not built in a day, so dont expect to compete for a while.
