I am seriously confused about this. Anyone who uses a mac is clearly paying for the operating system, because most of the parts are foxconn or similar. But seriously, why would anyone pay for the operating system? If people were worried about security, they would use BSD, and if they wanted ease of use they can just use Windows or Ubuntu. The operating system only has a tiny amount of the software that windows has, and the only people that have a genuine reason to use a Mac are people in the business of professional video or photo editing. All other tasks can be preformed more easily and much cheaper on a Windows or GNU/Linux computer.

People often use PCs when they want to utilize such things as hardware and software(Mac OS included) and while some 30 years ago, PCs were unfordable and in rare use, they are now a necessity for use of the much-needed internet. PC = Personal Computer!!!!!

Because OS X is as fast as linux, almost as secure as linux and much easier to use than any other OS. People just don't want to keep updating drivers, security issues and that shit... Softwares are just as good as windows, the battery lasts forever, the system is much stable, no freezes, no restarts, when you close the macbook and then open it again it starts fast, it boots fast... And it almost doesn't get hot, no air vents under it. At least that's why I changed a Dell for a Macbook :D

People use Macs 'cause they're hipsters. I joke, I joke ^^ Personally I use a PC though, and it does everything I want it to do, some people have other needs and prefer Mac I guess.

I use Apple Macs because the hardware is efficient, durable, and high-quality, and it runs a very sophisticated operating system that is both professionally made and supported and isn't crippled by the lack of a decent shell (or the need for extraneous security software). Even the argument about gaming is invalid now, since a lot of game-makers are making new games and porting old games to run on OSX (see Steam, et cetera). And let's not forget the fact that there are only two (desktop and server) versions of the current revision of OSX on the market.

It's 2011. There's no excuse for a professional/commercial desktop operating system that costs over 100 USD and ships in about twenty different versions to not come with an SSH and/or FTP daemon built in, among many other things.

An aside: as a musician, I'm beyond frustrated with Windows. It hasn't handled audio well since XP SP2, and it's getting worse.

EDIT: Yeah, OP. There is a lot less software available to run on OSX, in some respects, than on Windows. The reason for that is that OSX applications have to adhere to certain standards that don't exist in Windows, and there aren't fifty million under-developed and poorly-coded applications that all do the same thing.

In the long run, macs are cheaper, come with less "bloat-ware", are more secure, easier to use, and have the best technical support. And you can't say that you shouldn't need to worry about technical support, because every system will break down at some point, it just comes down to who you want to have your back when the sh!t hits the fan. Macs also have a higher resale value than any PC would ever have.

I use a Mac because its much more easier to use. On top of not having a tower that takes up tons of space around my desk, a huge collection of wires that goes every which way,... The Mac offers a operating system that Im wowed with. My boot up times are half that of Windows. Its alot more stable of a OS than Windows. I dont have viruses. I dont have any trojans that kill my memory, or scripts that cause registry errors. The interface is VERY clean and INCREDIBLY easy to use. After 20 years of using The PC... using a Mac is a dream. PlusI personally love the awesome keyboard and mouse of The iMac.

In terms of games... there is STEAM which has alot of games ported for The Mac. There are many publishers now making Mac based games like Paradox Interactive (Hearts of Iron, Victoria, etc.) and titles such as Back to The Future, Eve Online, etc. Honestly though as much as people say PC is for gaming. PC gaming is on the decline... has been for a decade now. When a new game comes out ... the first few things they say.... Available on X Box 360, and The PS3... then if they have time and manpower they would add PC. One good example is Battlefield 1943 and Battlefield Bad Company 2. Both titles available for both PS3 and 360 since Summer 09. They were in production for a PC release until a few days ago when they were cancelled. So not only had you have to wait nearly 2 years for these great games but they were cancelled in the end.

But one thing I can do on my Mac that I couldnt on my PC was to play Star Trek Online at a UNBELIEVABLE RESOLUTION! I play at about 2560x1440 on a 27" iMac. The GRAPHICS ARE INCREDIBLE! I never seen a PC screen this huge. To get a monitor size this big you have to custom order on Dell, HP, etc. you cant add it in 'Customize you PC'. With Apple its ready to go at any Apple Store nationwide.

I use my Mac for surfing the web, email, IRC, skype, Playing Star Trek Online, Hearts of Iron 3, iTunes, iMovie, sorting my contacts, and especially Radio DJ'ing, which The iMac does INCREDIBLE etc. So great that I dont even use a external mic because The iMac internal mic is so good I use that. I use my iMac for my day to day tasks and find everything much easier to use. I highly recommend to anyone to test drive The Mac at The Apple Store. Its a incredible computer... the best I ever had. And thats saying alot cause after 20 years of using, repairing PC's, etc. I had ALOT of computers.

And you know what else... you dont have to wait for your computer to be shipped to you... with a Mac you can go into any Apple Store and pick it up same day.
