I have been doing my accounting for my businesses on a PC I inherited, but it's time to move everything to the Mac. Unfortunately, I haven't heard too many good things about QB/Intuit for Mac, and certainly not many positive reviews explaining the difference between 2007 and 2011 editions, except that everyone is being forced to upgrade to 2011.

Any small business owners care to comment? I know Chris has mentioned not a few times that he isn't entirely happy with QuickBooks, but we don't have many alternatives. Suggestions? Recommendations?

If you are currently using Quicken on Windows, you can install Ubuntu on your Mac using VirtualBox. After you install Wine, you will be able to install Quicken (you will most likely need to allow the application to execute as an application. You can achieve this by right-clicking on the .exe. Go to Permission. Then click the checkbox that says something like Allow program to execute as an application.).

By doing this, you can also use a lot of your applications that you used to use when you used Windows.

Thanks, but that's not exactly the question I'm asking. I will be donating my old PC, and everything else I have is Mac.

No OSX program suggestions, but..

If it comes down to using Windows apps, WINE is available for OSX without having to emulate/install/configure/boot a whole new OS to just run a few Windows applications. http://www.winehq.org/ There's also CrossOver, which is a commercial version of WINE: http://www.codeweavers.com/products/ . If you want to emulate Windows, consider running Win98 if the app will run in it. Less memory to use in your virtual machine and it'll tax OSX less.

There's also the options fo going to an online system for your record keeping needs, and it'll work on any computer/phone/tablet you use.

I've never been able to successfully get Wine to work on my Mac.

We are using hosted QuickBooks for Mac. QuickBooks for Mac has been developed for the Mac OS. QuickBooks for Mac helps us save time and manage our business on Mac based computers. QuickBooks for Mac as a hosted software offers a much better, quicker, more secure, more reliable, and more effective solution than the desktop version of this software. QuickBooks hosting provides ability to work from anywhere and at anytime, provides cost efficiency, simultaneous access for multiple users, full backup, and 24/7 support free of cost. QuickBooks hosting leads to less IT related expenditure, as the QuickBooks software is installed on host’s cloud servers, and not on your computer system or local servers. Hosted QuickBooks run on a cloud server, and thus, does not use your system resources. It saves you much on the cost of system upgrades.
