I use MPC, it's 2011, and I use K-Lite's Mega Pack and it works like a dream.

I use VLC, it's 2012 and I don't need to use any packs. ;)

VLC wins by far. Its cross platform (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS) and supports far more video and audio formats then MPC. Plus it had a better interface and it much more widely known. There's not really any comparison.

VLC is the most bloated, memory hogging player I've ever used. I used to swear by it. But then I tried MPC Home cinema...there's simply no comparison: MPC does not have the frame rate issues with high-def that VLC seems to. MPC Does not use every resource your computer has to run the way VLC does. MPC does not have the glitches with ogg/mkv and dual audios that VLC does. MPC is better for anything subtitled. MPC supports all the types VLC does, PLUS realplayer and quick-time. MPC gives the user more control over the settings.

Basically, if you don't know what codecs/filters/shaders etc. are, then, you probably won't notice a major difference between the two. (Unless trying to watch one of the above mentioned types) If you do, however, definitely go with MPC.

You could probably uninstall some of the VLC codecs and it wouldn't be a memory hog. It's only going to be as efficient as the codecs you install.

MPC Home cinema Version IS THE BEST!!!!! It has something called Shaders that if you enable some of them you get superior quality. Shaders : Sharpen Complex 2 + [SD] [HD]. I swear it's Amazing. I used to use VLC. But after seeing the Sharper and much more vivid quality that you. Get with MPC. it is far Supirior. TRY IT!

I use Media Player Classic. And with the k-lite codec pack, not come across any media filetype it will not play.

Never attempted to use VLC. Why bother if what you got works?

VLC will play more file types, but only has the ability to use one core, so MPC is better for 720p + (especially on a netbook (hyper-threading is included in the dual core rule))
