So on my iPhone 3GS I have the "battery percentage" feature turned on so I can see the numerical value, but I've seen plenty of people who don't. Is there a good reason to keep it off?

They don't know you can turn it on.

I personally don't like having the % as I'm dissatisfied when i see it drop below %100 haha for some reason just having a simple graphic as a guide works better for me.

I like having the number there.
