When do you think channels and cable providers will only broadcast HD content?

When everyone in the world has HD TV's. It won't happen. There are people that run Windows 95 and have Dial-Up still. There are people that still only have black and white TV's. It will not happen for a long time.

Even if everyone gets a HDTV most programming will not go full HD since most companies do not want to invest in the equipment needed. Especially when it comes to satellite. (the satellites only have a fixed amount of bandwidth and upgrading them requires you to send someone into space to do it, it is a very expensive process. This is why there are always complaints about compression artifacts in HDTV they are trying to get as much as they can from the available bandwidth (PS most satellite companies as well as cable companies are nowhere close to using their full bandwidth but even with that, they wont be able to do every channel in 1080P or even 1080i. Most of the equipment was designed back when we considered 480p to be a breakthrough. Much of the equipment has not changed much since.

Even 480i SD was a compromise...since the designers of TV's needed something cheap/simple to sell as many sets as possible. That's why we had interlaced programming/NTSC as the standard for too many years in the US. Progressive scan was nicer looking...but more expensive for an analog format which they needed to get off the ground.

Until people started buying nicer sets with more bells/whistles did they get to see NTSC (Not The Same Color) in all its badly compromised glory. Video games made this even worse since you could see all the defects viewers had dismissed through the years. Had an uncle who had been stationed in Germany who watched local TV which didn't broadcast from the base and he told me years later how much better the picture looked than on US TV's. The reason...the compromises which were made.

It can only be as high quality as the original recording. So people that enjoy watching shows like I Love Lucy, they can't watch it in higher quality than the original thing. I'm sorry, but it won't happen, because it has so many popular series that are old (like Everybody Loves Raymond) that simply weren't recorded in HD.

The simple answer for OTA (Over-the-air) TV is never. The reason is that wireless companies are scrambling to get bandwidth from any/every source they can. One of those sources is OTA TV. Sixty to 15 or so years ago...the viewing public had access to OTA channels 2-83. Now...we have access to 7-51. Even this is going to shrink if the wireless companies can buy off the FCC from the OTA broadcasters. With their history of getting their way...wireless companies will again be the winner. The result being that you will see your TV channels disappearing.

The reason is that the FCC is proposing that instead of running your conventional TV tower several hundred feet high to hit as much area as possible...the broadcasters will need to erect "translator" towers in places which are served by full power TV. With more limited range/power...they will further shrink the reach of the signal. Even the fringe areas now will not have any TV at all. You may even see the broadcasters giving up on 720p/1080i to only offering 480p SD for all signals...because of the wireless companies. Want HD...you get satellite/cable and pay for ever increasing rates.
