Laptop acts glitchy and advice?

I have a Compaq R4012US (I know its a old one). lately when ever I turn on the laptop it shows the Compaq splash screen. and then it hangs.. I pull the ram change the locations button it back up and turn it on and it fires up.. loads into windows (XP) I can get it running for about 45 minutes then it freezes.. I restart the laptop and then I get a blank screen if I leave the laptop off for.. a good week.. it might start up I'm not sure what the issue could be. I've reach the end of my knowledge on this and I need help trying to figure out what I can do to get this laptop back up and running

My bet is that it's a failing piece of hardware. You said it's an old laptop. I'd say that the culprit is an aging hard disk. Move all the files that you need to another disk. Don't count on that laptop working. Of course, it could be something else. But I bet it's the hard drive. Or, does the laptop get very hot? It could be overheating. Try blowing some compressed air into the fan's intakes.

I did that and i put the hard drive in another laptop and it booted up fine the settings from both machines are nearly identical the laptop does get a little hot so i'm in the midst of cleaning the old thermal paste from the prossessor and putting some arctic silver in its place.

Alright. I think that it is another part then. Is there an error screen that shows up?

nope no error screen just comes up as a blank screen once in a while a few pixels are off but that shows up very very rarely right now i got it running and i'm running several programs at once just to see if its the prossessor (as of right now its been running about 14 hours give or take a few)
