Recently, my Windows Security Center service cannot be started and i just installed avira antivirus. Could Avira Antivirus conflicting with the windows security center? Avira was showing it was normal.

Honestly if you are looking for a good free anti-virus Avast is better. I test Anti-Viruses about once a year and Avira and Avast both do well. But the pop-up ad in Avira after each update, caused it to be put to second in the free anti-virus. Avast also has more features. I have never had any problems with Avast. I run it on three computers.

To answer your question, Avira could have been the one that messed it up but I have never experienced that problem. It could have also been a virus.

I have tried Avast and Avira, they are both good. Avira has a better detection rate, if i were to ask you between avast and avira which one would you recommend?

I know Avira has a slightly better detection rate, but Avast has seven real time shields and from what I remember Avira is only a virus scanner. So Avast will stop viruses before they reach your computer as opposed to catching them once they are there. I like Avast and as I said I run it on three of my computers because I ran out of Kaspersky Internet Security licenses.

Just make sure that you register Avast so that you get all the features and you should be good to go. You are welcome.

Okay, your problem is that you don't want multiple antivirus programs on the same computer. It'll mess things up. As the person above me said, Avast is a much better antivirus program than Avira is. However, Microsoft's free suite of antivirus and anti spyware (Windows Security Center) is the best antivirus I've seen. I know several other geeks who have decided that it's the best because it is A) Free. B) Light. It doesn't clog your computer like others might. C) Works well.

Or, if you're really worried about viruses, install Ubuntu or something like I did. Unfortunately, my Synaptics trackpad isn't compatible with it. :(

"Windows Security Center" is NOT a anti-virus or anti-spyware. It is the program that comes with Windows to warn you if you don't have anti-virus or a firewall enabled.

I am going to assume that you are referring to the free Microsoft Security Essentials program which is great and is very user friendly and I use it on clients computer that are less computer savy because it rarely prompts for user input. Avast is better in detection rates though.

Is this so? Hmmm. I just got my Windows laptop, but I'm not new to Windows. I've just never owned one so I havn't really played with this stuff. The first thing I downloaded was Chrome. The second thing was Ubuntu, which isn't working because of this stupid Synaptics trackpad.

Ya, Windows Security Center might have Windows Defender listed though, saying that is is running. I would recommended that you install a anti-virus on your new computer see my answer to this question to learn more.

Hello there

You should never run 2 anti-virus programs together you can run 1 anti-virus and 1 anti-spyware. But not 2 anti-virus. This can cause really big problems and can make your OS (operating system) unstable. If you need a list of good anti-virus programs look at https://www.e-junkie.com/ecom/gb.php?c=cart&i=809574&cl=57304&ejc=2 You can buy chris' ebook at the back there is a list of anti-virus programs but its good to read as it can help you protect your compuetr in the future.

I honestly & blindly trust my Kaspersky Internet Security 2011, i have used it's 2007 version, since then i am it's fan. I first got a chance to know Avast, but the problem is that if the virus is un-deletable then it will completely delete the folder/file from your OS.

O, are you saying that Avast doesn't detect things? What do you think of Avast, i had Kaspersky Antivirus before and i loved it but it expired and it cost too much to renew.

He is not saying that it doesn't detect things he is saying that it has trouble deleting viruses. I have never had that problem. Maybe he didn't try removing the virus while in safe mode.
