I use a lot of different chat services. How easy is it for someone to get my information, such as IP address and what is stored on my computer? Keep in mind I am using Ubuntu and I have all the remote desktop clients removed.

Your ip is accessible to anyone who can run a userscript on most chat services as well as what browser you are using and in some cases, all your browser info. I'd recommended that you use a web proxy like http://www.hidemyass.com

But proxies can steal your credentials if it gets decrypted on there end before it gets forwarded to the other machine you are hiding your ip from.

ya well it's better then going in without one, I suppose you could use tor but if you have to ask this question then you probably won't be able to run tor

Even if they get your IP there still is the router's firewall (what good it will do, idk) and NAT filtering. And as before the proxy could store the conversation behind your back and other data as well.

the internet is the old west, I agree but unless Obama passes extended internet regulations, stored information is almost useless

I mean information such as bank credentials. You establish an SSL connection to the proxy, then the proxy makes an SSL connection to the server. So the proxy can decrypt the credentials.

Look, you give out info to everyone without knowing it, when signing up for a bank account, you give the bank and it's employees your phone number, your address, and plenty other information and when filling out many other forms you give out the same information to companies, their employees and whether you want to or not, the government. In the 21st century, you have to be head of the CIA if you want to insure that all your info is kept private. A proxy is just a useful tool for getting past web filters and blocks and for achieving basic privacy.

If your chat client makes a secure connection, you should be reasonably safe. Using a VPN to tunnel traffic will protect any unsecured chat connections out to the Internet, along with the rest of your network traffic.
