Lately my iMac's harddrive has constantly been making a grinding-like noise, all of the time. Even now, when the only programs running are: Finder, Google Chrome, MiddleClick, and MagicPrefs. (The last two are just small apps that run in the background. They have been installed before the noise started) It makes the noise the entire time it is runnning OSX, but not while running WIndows 7. (Even with more things running) Is there anyway to stop the noise? Is anything serious wrong? |

I would make sure you have a backup to an external drive using either Time Machine or Super Duper. It sounds to me like your hard drive is about to fail. |

Also, if you have AppleCare, make sure to back up (anyway it goes, it's a good idea), and get a genius bar appt. set. Under warranty/AppleCare, you'll get the hard drive replaced, at which point you restore from backup, but the parts and labor are free. If you don't have warranty/AppleCare, swapping the drive isn't terrible, but find a good tear down if the system before you even think of trying to replace the drive yourself. Expect to spend about an hour to an hour and a half on the project. Make sure you double check the drive's heat sensor to make sure it makes it the replacement hard drive. Another option is to check on a local shop that might be able to do the work for you, which saves time and potential frustration. |

My 27" iCore7 iMac w/2 terra byte HD has had the notorious "GRUMBLING" noise since the day I bought it. I was told theres just a break in period. Now one year out of warrantee it still makes the f*cking noise with massive slow downs and I'm told my hard drive must be failing. NICE. |

Of course, it would stop making the noise after I ask the question.
