I'm trying to decide which for a new car, the price doesn't matter in this equation. What do you guys prefer? I've driven mostly automatics and find them a little bit boring. I'm definitely a performance enthusiast and a young man, so I'd like to get a lot out of it. I know it's not a huge difference, I would really prefer manual, but talking to a few people (older people) claim that they are annoying especially in city driving. Your thoughts?

If you live in a city or somewhere with a lot of stop and go, stick with the automatic.Otherwise I prefer a manual.I have more control of the car with a manual. The old saying "you save more gas with a manual" is not so true these days. You will average about the same fuel usage.

No, you will still save ~1 MPG.

My car has a Tiptronic transmission... If I want to do spirited driving, I switch to slap shift and if I go to Starbucks and want to drink my coffee, I switch to manual. Manumatic

is that also known as clutch-less manual? I don't think that car I'm looking at has that option, well it does but it's ALOT more expensive

No, a clutch-less manual is still manual. There isn't a clutch pedal to push down between shifts. What kind of car were you thinking about?

Ford Mustang V6 in particular, but other cars in the same range as well

Bleh... I hate Mustangs... Perhaps an 80s BMW 325ix?

I prefer a manual on a performance vehicle. My current commuter is an automatic, but I bought that so that both my ex-fiancee and I could drive it. I'm keeping it because it's a practical car, but I intend to get something with a big engine and a clutch before the summer months roll in as a fun car.

I'd prefer Automatic over manual anytime but with a big engine, the bigger the better. Currently I drive a 5.0L V8 with 5-speed auto SL500. I don't think manual is bad, the stick shift is not a problem, the clutch is the annoying part.

Automatic is great and I love them! However over here in the UK they seem to be mated to rather small engines and then you wish you had a manual. So id say drive one of each and see which suits you better.

Given a choice I'd have an automatic but then I'm not into racing around :) haha
