This is driving me crazy and I've searched for an answer and can't find what I'm looking for, so I hope one of you can help.
In windows Xp you could set your file preferences so that you could edit a file with one program and open it with another. That doesn't seem to be possible with windows 7. You can set your file associations numerous ways. You can go through the control panel or simply right click. None of those allow you to pick a program to edit.
For example. If I want to do a quick edit of an html file say in notebook. If I set the preference to notebook, there isn't a setting that allows me to open the file after the edits are finished without changing the file associate every time.
On the flip side of that, if I set the preference to firefox, there are no options to edit.
I hope I've been clearn, can anyone help?

If you right click on the file, you can go to "Open With," it will bring up a prompt with your options. Select "Choose Default Program" and assign the program you want to associate with that file type.
