I'm reading on a government site whether or not I need to register as a business owner, and this is what it say: If your business is a sole proprietorship, you do not need to register your business with the state.

What's that mean?

Please help! This could cost me thousands of dollars!

Thanks!

Sole proprietorship means you are running the business as yourself, not as a corporate entity like an LLC, C Corp, S Corp, or in partnership with someone else.

The answer would depend on what state agency you are looking at, and what state you are in. In my state, Washington, sole proprietorships must always register.
