In a question I wrote that got plenty of down-votes for "spam" but had no links or commercial content of any kind and was by no means automated, I got the explanation from Tim F that "Spam: Something the reader doesn't need to read". What do we need to read? Is this whole site considered spam? I think lockergnome needs a proper definition.

Keep your annoying questions on Yahoo! Answers. Thanks.

This is not a forum. It doesn't even operate like a forum, you don't introduce yourself or ask questions like this. You just ask questions on this site. This a statement you are trying to make that you have worded as a question. From now on, please refrain from asking these questions.

PuntingYoshi, why waste your time writing comments that cause people to dislike you? Have you ever heard of the quote by Benjamin Franklin, "Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt"?

No, TheTechDude. I'm asking for a definition of spam. "Something the reader doesn't need to read" is a definition that fits the entire site.

Dude, you need to chill out. You posted an annoying question; it got deleted. Deal with it, if not, there are thousands of other sites you can go and bother.

Some of the stuff on this site is useful information. I have learned quite a lot from reading the questions. Some people do need to read most of the information on this site, it helps to expand your knowledge of technology or whatever the question is about. Your first question did not teach anyone anything except tell everyone that you joined the site. If they wanted to know that they could just click on users and go to recent and see the new users.

PuntingYoshi: I'm not a dude :o and I'm not sure what makes you think I need to chill out... Maybe the heat is getting to me but I assure you my brain is functioning reasonably :) I've posted this question to provide those who don't know what spam is (those who reported me for spamming) with useful information. I am "dealing with it". My problem isn't that people reported me. It's that people reported me for the wrong reason.

TheTechDude: I've misjudged you and I apologise. I hope you can agree that this question contains useful information.

(Feb 02 '11 at 18:56) Hexadecimal Hexadecimal's gravatar image

@Hexadecimal: Its okay. I do agree that this question contains information that can teach users about what spam is.

According to Wikipedia:

Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately. While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media: instant messaging spam, Usenet newsgroup spam, Web search engine spam, spam in blogs, wiki spam, online classified ads spam, mobile phone messaging spam, Internet forum spam, junk fax transmissions, social networking spam, television advertising and file sharing network spam. People who create electronic spam are called spammers

Your Category:

Forum spam is the creating of messages that are advertisements, abusive, or otherwise unwanted on Internet forums. It is generally done by automated spambots.

Or the community may be calling u a common sliced ham brand: alt text

I don't know why they are being called a spammer either. However, I did tag them as a spammer in their fist question due to the fact that it had pictures of random things in it.

(Feb 02 '11 at 18:41) TheTechDude TheTechDude's gravatar image

I like it. You've answered my question to the point, unlike the others who just seem to want conflict. Thanks.

(Feb 02 '11 at 18:45) Hexadecimal Hexadecimal's gravatar image

It's a Q&A site so if you are not creating a positive question then by definition within lockergnome.net you are just making spam because the post is not deemed by said user(s) to be a question.

Using this theory I can post 'Hi, this is my cute cat (pic)' and said post within lockergnome.net is then considered spam and may be closed or deleted.

However, What is your favourite cat? Here is mine (pic)' would not be spam because you are asking a question that people can answer.

Uhh, so as my question asked... What is the definition within lockergnome.net?

(Feb 02 '11 at 18:42) Hexadecimal Hexadecimal's gravatar image

It was pointless crap you posted, it wasn't relevant to ANYTHING. You where just being silly. We don't want stuff like that on this site.

Who is "we"? Why does a user consider an introduction spam, after said user posted such questions as "I'm more tired than a..." and "PSA: Get your capitalization right"?

(Feb 02 '11 at 18:40) Hexadecimal Hexadecimal's gravatar image

"We" as in the community on this site.

Well one was a question and the other was a general announcement. You weren't introducing yourself. Perhaps if you had introduced yourself properly then it wouldn't have been so bad, but it was just a stupid picture.

The words of a wise man: "Dude, you need to chill out." At what point did you decide to progress from writing helpful comments and answers on questions that deserve them to writing spiteful and irrelevant comments and answers on questions you're not interested in?

(Feb 02 '11 at 19:31) Hexadecimal Hexadecimal's gravatar image

How is my answer irrelevant? Also you can't just report an answer because you don't like it.

(Feb 02 '11 at 20:22) Mattophobia ♦♦ Mattophobia's gravatar image

There were three questions asked, and your answer was an answer to none of them. I have no intention to bicker about administrator decisions, but I would like to see people use the "report" button more suitably. Do you agree? I suggest we move on and provide some positive participation, since bickering here doesn't look good for the community.

(Feb 02 '11 at 21:26) Hexadecimal Hexadecimal's gravatar image

Spam can be defined in many ways. I normally only say it is spam if it has links in it. The definition used on this site seems to change often. I reported your because you had a bunch of unnecessary pictures on it, that made it spam to me.

Fair dinkum. Thanks for your honesty.

(Feb 02 '11 at 18:41) Hexadecimal Hexadecimal's gravatar image

Can I just ask what a "dinkum" is?

(Feb 02 '11 at 18:47) TheTechDude TheTechDude's gravatar image

Australian slang. "Fair dinkum" means geniune. A "dinkum" is an Australian satirical textbook, magazine, comic, etc.

(Feb 02 '11 at 19:00) Hexadecimal Hexadecimal's gravatar image

Okay. that makes more sense thanks. I have learned something new today. I am from the Untied States so I am not exposed to the "slang" of other countries. Thank you.

(Feb 02 '11 at 19:11) TheTechDude TheTechDude's gravatar image

That's ok. You own all of our ugg boots and vegemite, so maybe one day you'll own all of our dinkum too ;)
