Last night on Coast to Coast AM, a lady was talking about internet security and cited her website, startingpage.com as an alternative to Google because it takes your search query and searches Google on it's own servers and then relays the results to you. I have used previous versions of this site like ixquick.com and I like that this one has a dropdown list but it doesn't work quite like Google's, so i'm considering going back to Google if I can't find an alternative with a sufficient dropdown. If you use a search engine other than Google, what is it and why do you like to use it?

Looks like google is at least working on security. They must have read your question ;)

Google 'now with SSL' or at least beta.

I think I read about that before I wrote this question. I don't blame Google for security issues because if any other search engine had as much traffic as Google it would have the same problem.

I love when people fail to answer a simple question, how about we rephrase it for stupidities sake.

Question: I don't like or want to use Google, can you name other search engines besides Google with a dropdown menu? (also, I dont care why YOU use Google, just answer the question I asked, thanks.)

Answer: Dogpile.com, Bing.com, search.Yahoo.com, metacrawler.com, lycos.com, ask.com, as well as quirky little sites like Duckduckgo.com (who dont track you)

I would recommend http://www.dogpile.com/ for normal searches and http://www.wolframalpha.com/ for a ultimate wikipedia kinda thing.

Hi, i've been using it for about a week now. It has great search results but the dropdown is a little buggy and sometimes after I search something it goes to the homepage. Any suggestions to make it work better?

So wait. How is a search engine that already searches Google going to be better than google? You're just doing extra work.

It searches Google using their own ip address thus you cannot be tracked through it.

If you're using an interface for Google, you're still using google's search engine.

I'd say http://duckduckgo.com/ is the best other than Google.

I've used duckduckgo and I think it's good but for me the dropdown menu is an essential feature in a search engine which if I recall correctly, duckduckgo doesn't have.

(Feb 04 '11 at 23:45) zman zman's gravatar image

I see your point. I generally just type something in and hit enter, I don't use the dropdown.

I don't use any other search engine, except Google. I know that there have been concerns in the past (and there still are) about Google seeing everybody's information, but I am not that concerned because millions of queries are going through Google so there is a slim chance they see mine or even care about me. The only other search engines I have ever used before are Swagbucks (I gave up realizing all of the good stuff required A LOT of points) and GoodSearch (to help out a charity I knew about.) But, I always come back to Google.
