If you and your family use Macs, you could set everyone up with an iChat account. That has worked very well for me in the past and it is still my default messenger program. Although I do not extensively use the video chat function. If you are working with multiple operating systems, you could try Skype.

I highly recommend Skype. I use it daily and rarely have a problem. The only time I've ever ran into a problem is with someone new who doesn't have a good connection. Skype is free and super easy to use too.

With skype you can also text and voice chat as well. Or, one person can video chat and the other(s) don't have to. It's extremely flexible and has lots of options. I think you'll enjoy it.
