I have updated the thing but as you can see ,,, nothing.

I can hover over were it should be and open Firefox and the Ubuntu dashboard.

Hi, have you tried re-starting the x-server?

ctrl alt backspace , or, ctrl alt print-scrn k

If that doesn't fix it,

alt F2,

type in, gnome-terminal

sudo synaptic in the terminal

search gdm in synaptic

mark for re-installation, apply...etc

post the results

cheers Pete

  1. Bring up the run dialog (alt+F2).
  2. If you are not using Compiz (desktop effects), enter, without quotes, "metacity --replace"
  3. If you are using Compiz, enter, without quotes, "compiz --replace"

That should do it. It happens to me from time to time. It's even more frequently-occurring if you happen to be using Emerald in conjunction with Compiz (in which case the command would be "emerald --replace").

Press alt+F2, type in gnome-terminal. Once in terminal, type

sudo gnome --replace

The only fix that I would now is to do a clean install of ubuntu.. I don't know if ubuntu has a system recovery like in windows 7.

Good luck with it!
