I know Google Chrome OS, or the project name Chromium, is an operating system designed for the internet only, but is there such thing as an alternative to it that I can install to my computer?

Well, i know about Ubuntu Netbook Edition, kinda similar. And Jolicloud too, i think that's more into the whole ChromeOS concept.

Do you mean a variant of Google Chrome or just another Operating System all together?

1st thing, chromium is a project name for the whole Chrome line (not just the OS).

There is no real chrome alternative I know. The closest is a light linux dstro with firefox or android with no apps

Try Zoho.com to find an online office app site that provides the functionality of Google Chrome OS minus the actual operating system.

Windows 7 Starter, and not too far away there will be Windows 8 (for ARM?)...

You will see Operating systems get leaner and faster...

And you can see the validity of this in Internet Explorer 9 (released btw), which is significantly faster than ie8!

Obviously all big corporations are focusing on Mobile, even AMD & Intel, so look for new stuff to come out soon, as it is and will be for some time to come!

Even the original creator of Linux thinks the kernel is far too bloated, so we may see a major overhaul of Linux OSes come out soon too, who knows!
