If you'll just be using it for iWork and basic internet stuff then you don't need more then 2.

You don't need more than 2 GB for iWork.

I would say four. The only reason is future use. For the moment you are only using it for iWork. But at the same time you should always be thinking what you may want to use it for in the future. 4GB is pretty standard and will go a lot further than 2GB should you find that you want to use it for more than that.

I would agree with you guys there only, Macs are expensive in and of themselves. If you're going to go with Mac in the first place may as well go for a little better. If you're going to spend $1300, what's $100 more? Especially if it turns out he needs the four gigs. I would rather have 4 and not need them than need four and not have them.
