Which one is better? For a relatively large file hosting website? Because I've noticed computers with loads of Hard drive space are cheaper than a proper server. Cheers |

To start out, a normal machine should be fine. If the site ends up getting really busy you'll want to switch over to heavier stuff. I've never had a site so busy I couldn't run it off a decent desktop. It's not like it's rendering 3D video or something, it's just reading files. Your hard drive's speed may be an issue. |

If you are running it in your own home, and aren't building your own system, I recommend going for PC class hardware. Servers tend to be built with datacenters in mind, and noise dampening is not a priority. You don't want a jet engine sitting next to your desk, I'll bet, but that's what you get with even the best prebuilt server boxes from Dell. For the most part, as others have said, PC hardware will scale well. Of course, if you do go beyond your hardware's capabilities, you can always cluster and reap additional benefits from multiple machines - but at that point,you might be better served with a decent server class rig stuffed in a soundproofed room. :) |

If the computer server has decent specs (such as a good processor, decent amount of RAM, etc.) then it should be able to handle a handful of users at a time. Remember that you will need a good Internet connection to provide clients with a decent download speed from the server. |

As long as the amount of ram and processor speed are decent, a couple high speed hard drives should be enough for a file hosting site. It isn't needed to go big spender on high end server hardware if it isn't necessary. |

Your budget will answer this question for you... If your needs do not warrant a traditional server, then just use a home server. If your plans however will exceed your needs currently, then consider how long before you will need to upgrade to a full traditional server, but again cost is the #1 factor, always. |
