I have been very disappointed with my internet speeds lately and I am trying to figure out what it is. Is it possible that because I use OpenDNS, their DNS servers are causing the slowdown? Should I go back to just using my ISP's (Cox) DNS servers? I run Mac OS X 10.6. Thank you in advance.

You could try to switch to Googles' DNS servers which are "8.8.8.8" and "8.8.6.6". This may or may not help you. There really are no good ways to speed up your internet but you can check to see if you have anything that is stealing your bandwidth or that is slowing you down:
Any questions just ask. |

Have you tried to download the same files using both DNS? This would give you a measurable result that you could use as a comparison difference to support your decision on which to use! This would be based upon facts and not an opinion btw. Furthermore you personally will know that truth based upon your own research, and your findings would leave no room for doubt. One of the most common tricks to speeding up your internet bandwidth is to unplug your modem & router (if you have one) leave them off for 10 minutes + and then turn them back on, what this does is it shakes off those who may be pinging your computer. If you don't have a router you may want to get one, these can increase your speed significantly if you are having issues, part of this is due to a very effective hardware firewall which can setup to improve bandwidth performance. Cisco goes through a lot of research on how to improve bandwidth, so if you can afford Cisco, they have great products, and their routers often have less problems then other cheaper routers. Remember to restart your computer after you have unplugged your modem. Also, you may want to scan for Viruses, Malware & Spyware, these can slow you down significantly too. (This is actually the first step by the way.) I've tried unplugging my router for the 10+ minutes and it hasn't helped incredibly. Unfortunately, I just don't have the money now to switch to Cisco. In addition, I use Mac OS X, so there is no need for me to scan for viruses...yet. Thanks for your help. DNS is what resolves the IP of the server. It's not going to effect how long it takes to download a file. I believe my answer was too far left indeed, ty for that reminder. :D I am 100% positive Mac OS X is not 100% virus free this is a popular mis-informed belief...
