1st question or 1001st question, you should really look at your grammar and spelling. You will get eaten alive by most of us for spelling and grammar mistakes.

Just sayin'...

Don't be so dramatic, you US spelling and grammar cops should take it easy on people who are not native English speakers. We took the time and effort to learn your language, don't be so picky, or if you have the time to say how bad we write then take the time to teach us to write better or edit or something. It's very easy to just point out errors and do nothing about it. Just sayin'...

i know how people is around here and i'm gonna try to atleast try to fix my spelling and grammar but is it so bad?

(Feb 25 '11 at 18:22) eike93 eike93's gravatar image

@eike93: it's not that bad.

Here is what you wrote:
"i was just wondering why some geeks where picking xp over windows 7?"

Some of the things that you could improve on are:

  1. Capitalizing
  2. Using "were" instead of "where"
  3. What you put in the description was not a question it was a sentence. So you would use a period not a question mark.
  4. The word "choosing" makes more sense and flows better than "picking".
  5. The title needs capitalization as well.

So then your sentence would look like:
"I was wondering why some geeks were choosing Windows XP over Windows 7."

And your title would look like:
"Windows XP over Windows 7"

For many businesses, they had legacy programs that only worked with XP. Windows 7 Professional, however does have XP Mode, which can help with these kinds of programs. I suppose it's a matter of preference, however, there is a comparison chart that people can look at if they are curious what the differences between XP, Vista and Windows 7 are: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/compare?T1=tab20

Most people that say they want to stick with XP are the people with the "it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. While this is a great old cliche, in this scenario, it doesn't work. Reason being that while XP may run great, and the user has no reason to upgrade at the moment, sometimes that user is not aware that Microsoft is not, in any way/shape/form, supporting Windows XP anymore. Yes, if you install the OS "fresh" you will get updates up to the point where they ceased support, but there are no "new" updates anymore.

That, to me, is all the reason to upgrade. One must remember that Windows XP is now a ten-year old operating system. It can't be used forever! Would you be content with your ten-year old car or would you thinking of "upgrading" in the near future?

That said though, it may also be an issue that their machine can't handle Windows 7 yet, and they can't afford to upgrade their PC at the moment, so, that would be reason enough for me to stay with "what works" for a little while longer.

Upgraded to Windows 7 quickly.

Using Windows Xp for another ten years is not likely to work, my tablet from 2005 runs it, not cost effective to buy anything else yet.

"""Would you be content with your ten-year old car or would you thinking of "upgrading" in the near future?"""

That would be classified as new, more like twenty plus years old and still driving it.

eike93, you are doing far better with two languages than many here do with one-- and their native language, at that. As I always say to somebody who does me the courtesy of speaking to me in my native language, I never criticize grammar of a foreigner when he/she speaks my language far more fluently than I can speak his/hers.

As for your question about "XP over windows 7", some IT professionals asked that same question about three years ago, when MS began making noises to promote Windows 7. The IT group even built a website to post a petition to MS, to be signed by active IT professionals.

The IT complaint was related primarily to the mounting cost of MS corporate licensing-- corporate IT across the country was hitting the first rough waves from the recession, and did not need budget expense from still another forced migration to Windows 7 to complicate matters.

We also must remember XP is an extraordinarily long-lived, and well-proven Windows OS. After a decade of field-based recodings (SPs 1-3, and a galaxy of various other tweaks) Windows XP worked well enough in most IT shops. In addition, end users were familiar with XP, eliminating the need for costly and time-intensive basic training. The cardinal rule of IT is, if it works well enough, there are plenty of other (and overdue) projects that need attention.

As we are tempted to forget, computers were created to accomplish actual workplace objectives. Yet, there are forces still driving Vista and 7 that are completely unrelated to either work or computing, proper. For example, Digital Rights Management (DRM) concerns delayed release of Vista an entire year, in order to render Vista a DRM-safe vending machine for Hollywood. Critics of Vista grumped that year might have been better invested in security issues.

But hardware evolution eventually will move most XP users toward Windows 7 or 8. That evolution means better displays, faster data transfer, more and different forms of memory, vast increases in storage, and some yet hard-to-define improvements that may evolve from cloud and mobile computing, and the need to move between systems-- both remote and local-- with ease.

Yet, please note, no one is talking anymore about the need to move to a "safer" Windows, as the basis for a migration. In fact, a safer Windows is an oxymoron and cover story for a Windows just as insecure as ever.

I don't see why people would still use Windows XP. That's like keeping a 14" TV with built in VHS player instead of upgrading to a 50" plasma, even though you can afford it!

XP is now over a decade old, move with the times and get Windows 7. It runs faster, looks better and just works!

a lot of ppl use windows XP coz it can make or system run a bit faster but this is only by a small amount coz of the hardware speed today is crazy, when ppl are playing games there system in still runing in the background and windows XP is a lot lighter then windows 7 this is coz windows 7 uses a lot of high demanding UI setting and takes up more Hdd room and Req more from the system to install on the hdd, so there is that reason and then there is personal prefrence a lot of ppl dont want to upgrade (even tho of what i just said does not make it a upgrade in someways) because they like XP

Who knows? They are stuck in their old ways maybe, or just don't want to upgrade or don't see the point etc.

Well, everyone will have to upgrade sooner or later :).

That's dumb, go to Windows 7. You can even customize it like XP and even take off the effects, if you don't like that. KNOCK IT OFF.
