No. Most computers come with pretty good onboard sound chips and you will get a pretty good sound by using good quality speakers or headphones.

However, you may want to invest in a sound card because those good speakers or headphones will enable you to experience a better sound experience with a dedicated card. It's also one less thing for the CPU to faff with.

But it really comes down to budget. I would get the good quality speakers or headphones and if you are not happy then get a good sound card because you will get a tinny sound via bad speakers no matter how good the sound input is.

One disadvantage though, at least for me, my on-board audio wont work with Linux.
