I don't know of any, or if one even exists, but what you could do is if you have a program with a LOT of fonts, i.e. MS Word, you could copy the the text with the font you want to identify, and then paste it into Word and the font should copy too, as theoretically, that font wouldn't display if you didn't have it in your OS Font database.

This is a good idea. Now that Office 2010 has the 3 different paste options, I can make it paste source formatting. Thanks for the suggestion!

When I need help identifying "unknown" fonts I use a few free tools:
1. What The Font
2. Identifont
3. Message Boards: Typophile
4. Bowfin Printworks
5. TypeNavigator
6. Flickr Typeface Identification
7. Lists of Fonts

And they are nicely grouped under this article titled - "7 Free Tools to Identify A Font"
Found at: http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2008/12/7-free-tools-to-identify-a-font/

I have used the top two the most, even though some of the programs are manual with questions and answers. Sorry, no identifying by highlighting. They may not be 100% of what you are looking for, but they are a great start and a valuable resource.
They have helped me out in the past.

I'm familiar with these, but they don't quite do what I want. I'm trying to check for consistency across a site as far as font size and type. E.g. I would want to know if I'm looking at 12pt font not 12px font or Arial not Currier.

I have found and extremely handy Firefox extension to identify font from text of a web page is the extension called font finder. It helps you to identify font information about elements on the web page and copy the same for future use.

Plus it does allow you to analyze a selection in the webpage for font recognition.

I have tried it out and it does work. I believe that this is something along the lines of what you were actually looking.
