I was using Steam on my mac a lil while back for portal and again a month or two ago. Now every time I try to open Steam it says that steam is in offline mode. There is no clear way to turn Steam back from offline mode nor do I know how it got there. Are there any tips or ways to fix this problem?

If you are in offline mode and want to change to online mode you can simply go into Library (right click steam > library), go to file>Online Mode.

Usually, Steam being in offline mode means it was unable to connect to the internet, but it will still allow you to play the game (otherwise Steam would be a crappy service). Make sure you are connected to the internet when you try and run Portal and try and sign into the Steam client before you try and run any games just to be sure you can connect.

One thing to note, generally speaking, Steam will not connect to the client if you are on a public access network. If you're on any type of WiFi that can be accessed by the public it will make Steam open in offline mode.
