My (android) phone is able to listen to FM radio but not AM. I prefer to listen to AM radio and have been looking for an app to do so. So far I haven't had any luck. Does anyone know of an app I could download and maybe the reason why they don't include AM radio into cell phones?

There is TuneIn Radio: http://tunein.com/
There is a version for Android and it has both FM and AM radio.
Just click on "Get TuneIn Radio Today" and select your version.
I hope it works out for you.

Android phones don't have the antenna to get the AM frequencies. The closest is to use an app that goes online and gets the Am channels that is also streaming online (like tunein)

No, the antennae are frequency-incompatible.

But it may be available at some point on something called iheartradio.
