Why should you have to convince them? Why not say that you need wireless in the house.

Tell them to go wireless, like what @josephtaylor1995 said.

btw, wires aren't extinct, they are just getting better

Show them the benefits to having wireless in the house.

perhaps if you put forward the money for a wireless router and ask if you can buy one, assure them they wont notice any difference and that it will be secured.

buy a cheap router on ebay and run the Ethernet cable down behind whatever you put the computer on when you connect and run another cable up from one of the inbuilt wired router ports found in most wireless routers then they will never know the difference also hide ssid on the router to stop them finding out that way.

don't forget to use a long wire for the coming up part or someone might try to pull it up to reach their computer and damage the router

On the contrary, cables are far from being extinct. Most web servers use cables as they are a lot faster than wifi, gamers also use cables because, like I said, they're faster.

true... But more and more servers are running on WIFI. Think about it.. When you have WIFI at 300+ MBPS.. why use the standard 100MBPS Ethernet when you can use WIFI?

because Ethernet is 1 gbps

What ethernet are you using thats 100mbps? Fiber optic cables go well into the 1gbps+ range.

Assuming they know you are a geek, assure them that if they purchase the hardware, you will set it up and it won't effect their speeds and etc.

Like my parents built a trust with me, so they know that I am a geek and they can trust me technology wise. In fact whenever they need help they run to me! :-)

Get yourself a wireless router and hook that up, then give your parents an account on your laptop for when your not using it and send them outside. Then they will see the benefit of all of you having wireless. They might even fork out for a laptop of their own.

Show them that having cables make your room dirty and tell about advantages of wi-fi over wired...

Although wires can quite make a mess, wires can be useful too!

Another option is to get a 3G card. I used to be in the same situation as you until my parents found a use for WIFI.

in the first place why are they against having Wifi? Cost? Fear of the unknown? Security?
