So me and a friend are trying to start a minecraft server. He can get in fine but other cannot. They will get error messages like: Connection refused, or connection timed out. He is starting it on his mac and is currently dedicating 1gb ram on it. He ported it and everything so we dont know why it wont work. Does anyone know why this isn't working?

Firstly, you need to be typing his external ip address, not the same as he is.

Secondly, he needs to make sure that his router forwards port 25565 of this address to the internal address of the server. If you tell me the make of his router, I can find a guide, or help him with that in some way.

Once the port forwarding is set up, many sites will be able to tell him his ip address, which he must then give to you, and you must then use this address in Minecraft to connect to the server.

I've had this same problem and like Tim said above me, 'he needs to make sure that his router forwards port 25565'. Yesterday (before this question was asked) I bought a new router since my current one is way to crappy to even handle my 190Mbit/s connection and had no possibility to port forwarding at all!

You're not bound to port 25565, in the server.properties you can also set the port to which ever number you like. If you internet provider denies the use of port 25565 than try 443 which is pretty much a public port that barely gets blocked.

And if you are using bukkit than you can download your plugins through here http://plugins.bukkit.org/

Edit: And please do not forget that download != upload. I may have a 190Mbit/s download connection but I've only got about 10MBit/s upload (this is what might cause lagg)
