Ello wonderful world of tech enthusiasts

I am looking on for a good "home" server to be able to run a few Virtual Machines for testing only), run multiple websites as well as a one stop solution for backing everything up and it has to be reliable.

My "home" operating environment consists of:

  • 2 Windows 7 Home Premium boxes
  • 2 Linux boxes
  • 1 Mac Mini (Tiger)- Spare workstation
  • 1 eMac (Tiger)- For the Children
  • 1 G4 running (leopard) - To be retired after many happy years
  • 1 Netbook (Windows 7 / Linux)
  • 1 Laptop (XP)
  • 1 Server 2003 (current server) - Needs to be upgraded or replaced

Looking at my options I came up with 3 possible solutions:

    1. A Mac Mini Server and adding a 4 TB external storage device - for around $1800.00
    2. A new Windows Server 2008 with 4 TB of external storage - around $2400.0
    3. Building a new Linux Server and adding 4 TB of external storage - Around $1600.00

What would you choose and why? Keep in mind that the server needs to run 24 hours a day 365 days a year unless under maintenance etc....

Thanks in advance for all your help
    michael

if your going to build a linux server why not just put the storage internally????

Is there no way to put the 4TB internally?

Let me know what sort of specs you want, and I can shove something together.

From your options I would say the Mac Mini server. The windows option is expensive and will not give you anything the Mac one wont, if anything the Mac one is far better. The Linux one is a good price but I would not like to give advice on a Linux server because I do not know all that much about them. I have worked with servers both Windows and Mac and I much prefer the Mac, however I can see why someone would use the Windows.

I would say use Linux if you know enough about it. I haven't used it much, but it seems to be the most common OS out there. My 2 favorite websites are hosted on Linux based servers, Facebook and Google.
