Why should I buy multiple domain names that are similar to the one that I desire?

The only reason you would need to do that is if you thought that your website would get so popular that people might want to steal your idea. For instance, if I made a website that I thought would go viral and I had somesite.com then I would also register somesite.net and somesite.org so that people couldn't steal my idea.

Many people register multiple domain names to secure all potential sources of traffic for their Web site. In my opinion, registering multiple domain names to secure your brand is pointless and a huge waste of money, even if you have a super popular blog. Also, always try to register a .com domain name for your Web site or blog because most people automatically assume that your domain name ends in .com, which is why I always go with the .com extension.
