I'm in an after school activity called tech crew. It's where we are responsible for all of the construction, lights, sounds, etc for every show that is being held in the school's auditorium. For every play that I help out with, I always get a DVD of the play. So far, I got 2 DVDs of the plays I helped with this year (freshmen). I'm tired of always having to put in the DVD in order to watch it. To solve this solution, I'm deciding to save the DVDs to my laptop. Before I do this procedure, all I want to know is how much space would a 2 hour DVD take on average? So far I've done 2 plays and 12 events this year. But I only got 3 DVDs from the main shows (plays). |

an average dvd is about 3 gb. if you were to copy the .vob files i think, the largest ones, starting from name_0 or something to that effect, import them in to video editing software, you could export the whole movie then as a mp4, or avi, which will be considerably less in size. |

It depends how you compress them. With Handbrake you can set the size of the video file it rips off the DVD. It can be whatever size you want, 1GB is about average for 2 hours. |

Use DVDShrink to rip them to your hard drive, then use Handbreak to convert them to a single AVI file (which will be anywhere from 700MB to 1.4GB, depending on the quality you want it, you can even just tell it how big you want the file to be) |

As far as hard data goes, single layer DVDs can be a maximum of 4.7 GB on one side. Dual layer DVDs, which are common for movies, can be 8.5 to 8.7 GB on one side.
