My mom used to work for Kaspersky, so I have a bunch of copies for free- including nice licensing. But I've never really used it. I just don't need antivirus. I can tell whether something's a virus or not by looking at it. I've been using computers for a while, and I think I know enough to know something's wrong when I download a picture and it asks me if it's OK to run a script with root access.

If you're going to a free option then choose either Avast! or Microsoft Security Essentials. Both are light on system resources and do a good job of protecting you as far as free software goes.
If you want to buy your protection then go with either Kaspersky or NOD32.
