Both -- I prefer for my desktop wallpaper/background to be like a (real world) window, meaning I like to vary the view from time to time.

It depends on my mood and what my favorite desktop wallpaper/background is at a given moment. I've had gorgeous, high resolution, ultra-wide screen black & white images from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Mars Rovers on my dual monitors as backgrounds in the past, and lately I have a favorite color photo of my daughter.
