What ever happened to the Intel Core i9 CPU?
Was it replaced by the six core, core i7 980x?
Or is an 8 core, core i9 still to come?

As far as I know Intel released the i7 980X rather than i9's, but I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility of some monster 8 core i9's with hyperthreading in the future. Now that the multiple core craze has started there is no knowing when and where it will end.

I wouldn't worry about it. There is a 90 core processor being developed that's about the size of a table, so I'm sure more cores will be coming soon.
