I use Gmail. Hotmail has never even remotely compared in terms of features and flexibility, in my use.

I use Gmail. I like it because I think it has the best web email.

Definitely Gmail. It's cleaner and faster and less clunky.

Also it can be easily accessed via google's homepage.

It really depends on what you prefer, i personally use gmail because of the sleeker interface compared to hotmail's "boxy" and also i think the gmail does a better job in preventing spam mail .etc but at the end of the day i suggest you give both a shot and compare the pros and cons of each one.

I seem to be the odd one out. I like Hotmail much better than Gmail for a few reasons. When I want to check email on my old, slow laptop Gmail literally crashes the browser, but Hotmail just goes slowly. If I remember right I got spam email soon after I got a Gmail address (all of it went in the spam folder), but when I got my Live.com email address I didn't have spam for a long time (until someone shared my email address with some spam website). I would rate both the Gmail and Hotmail spam filters about equal. As for storage space I've never deleted an email that was not spam on either Gmail or Hotmail, I still have a lot of extra space in both accounts. Hotmail supposedly has no hard limit and will gradually grow as my email grows. Gmail is increasing at a pace of 108 MB per month (from my calculations). I use Windows Live Mail that's designed a lot more for Hotmail than it is for Gmail, but I like the "HTTP" feature that Hotmail has opposed to the IMAP that Gmail uses. I personally like the Hotmail visual interface better, but that's probably because I'm used to it. A bit to the side, but... Google Talk's desktop client is horrible compared to Windows Live Messenger (IMHO). If I remember right Google Talk forces you to use a Gmail address, but Windows Live messenger allows any email address you want.

One final word: I have a little bias toward Microsoft rather than Google because of issues I've had with Google.

I prefer Gmail, because they have Google Labs. Some of the best things that Google Labs offers is texting people. I've used it when I've needed to. I love the Terminal theme. It makes me look cool (like a geek) at school, and teachers sometimes think that I'm trying to hack the school's servers.

Go with Gmail. I also use it. Hotmail makes you look more unprofessional. The best would of course be your own e-mail address.
