Everybody knows Apple depends heavily on its flagship store and it's possible that people would not have wanted the iPhone with only Apple's apps. What do you think?

In a word, Yes. Actually, the only reason I bought an iPod was to replace my old HP IPAQ as a UMPC. I filled up all the HDD space with apps and didn't load any music until a year after I bought it. I'm aware that an iPod is not an iPhone, but the concept is still there.

Yes, people today complain that the iphone is too restricted. Imagine a world where apple made all the apps? The iphone was sold with the appstore, not the other way around in my opinion. BUT we have to think back to the good old days when phones were pretty much just phones. The iPhone whould have still been pretty brilliant, just not worth the price and it would not have been as popular.

Thank god for the smart decisions at apple. The real question is: Would the iPad have been a success if the iPhone didn't exist? I believe that the ipad was only a hit, because the infrastructure was there. Appstore, developers and people know how to use the thing before they even touch it.
