My mother is very adamant that I don't take my Alienware M17x on my 2 week European Vacation. She insists that I take her crappy HP with integrated graphics shudders. I have a Kensington Lock, anti-theft software installed and I told her I only want it to play games on the flight over and during down time. She's worried that I'm going to spend all my time on it, which simply isn't true. How do I convince her that it's only for a few torrented movies, Skype with friends, and a little Oblivion or League of Legends during flights or on train rides. Also, please don't suggest that I flat out don't take it. I have self control and am looking forward to experiencing something new in a new place above all else. This is simply going to be used to occupy myself during downtime, as I said. Thanks. |

I have had this same problem before. One time I just stuck it inside of my bag, and my parents didn't know about it until we went through airport security, I wouldn't recommend this approach, but keep it in mind as a last resort. I might try to explain that plane rides get very boring, especially those 30 minutes after takeoff and before landing. Bringing a laptop is usually the best thing to keep me occupied. You could say that you already have some movies that you will watch during the flight, and without watching them, you wouldn't have anything else to do. Also, there is usually some time at the end of the day where you are in the hotel with nothing to do. You could use your laptop to check your e-mails, upload pictures to Facebook, and Skype with your friends about how cool the trip is. If you are staying in 1 hotel, make sure to lock it in a safe, or in your suitcase while you are out of your room to ensure that you won't "waste time" on it and also so it won't get stolen. If your mom only wants to bring hers, say that there will be times where both of you will want to do something online, and this way, each of you could use your own computers. Hope this helps. I know how boring vacations can be without a laptop. Hope you have fun in Europe. |

I think your mother's right. If you bring your laptop, it will deter motivation from other activities. As far as your self-control goes, you can have excellent self-control yet still decide that playing a video game is better than seeing sights and what not. I would bring a cell phone with a few basic games like tetris to hold you through the flight and you can text people or sleep if you want but don't bring something like an Iphone that'll have you addicted to WOW or whatever you play. Also, consider this: your mom is going out of her way to pay your way to what I assume is a different continent then you are from or live in. I myself, have never been out of my country(USA) let alone to another continent because I can't afford it and have never flown. I've been out of state once and I never got out of the southwestern region of my country. If my mom or anybody for that matter, offered to fly me to another continent, I wouldn't care if I was limited to bringing only a water bottle, I would be thrilled instantly. You should thank your mom for this! Have a good time! |

When I was living in Greece for 4 months, the only Computer I had was not connected to the Internet. I was in and out of my home enjoying the City, hanging out with my friend, drinking coffee, The booze, and the food. When I got back home at like 2 in the morning, I would then do my Programming. If I wanted to use the Internet there is such thing as an Internet Cafe, where you pay 1,90 Euro an hour for Gaming, internet, Skype and whatnot. Listen, don't take your personal belongings, you may lose them. ~Blizzardo1 |

Personally I never take my laptop on trips. I have an iPhone that I can use to play games or listen to music on the flight, and the plane usually has a lot of in-flight TV shows and movies to choose from. Besides, you're going to a place most other kids can only dream of going to. Don't take it for granted and enjoy it. You can tell stories to your friends about visiting a new place instead of playing WOW on your laptop. |

Suggest a deal to them, such as only spending a certain amount of on it each day, and promise them that if you exceed this pre-agreed upon limit they can take the laptop. Hopefully they will agree to this comrpomise, and then you'll only need to negotiate the time limit. Good luck. |

I would have to agree with @steigerjb. Leave them and enjoy the trip. When I went to France 5 years ago, I brought a mp3 player, a (paper, omg!) notebook, couple of pens, and a camera. The one time I used a computer over there was at a cybercafe to send some emails. IMHO, this is the only way to travel. |
