My computer decided one day that it wanted to stop working. So I took the time to order parts to build my own. I planned on using my current hard drive since it already has everything I need on it. However, when I start up my new system, my OS won't load. The computer wants to try to fix the issue, but it can't and when I try to start it as normal it restarts as it starts the logo for Windows 7. This puts me back at the two options along these lines, Fix it or start as normal. I put this hard drive in another computer as a slave drive and was able to access the files that I need and backed those up. What do I do to fix this issue?

1st thing, you can't transfer a licenced windows os from one computer to another. This is because when you registered/validate your key, the registration server keeps a record of the cpu used when registering.

2nd, you can use your windows 7 disc and repair the OS on the hard drive. See http://www.nirmaltv.com/2009/12/17/how-to-repair-windows-7-installation/

OEM copies of Windows 7, thoes provided by HP dell, ect. are tied to the motherboards made by that company. You cannot use these copies on another system! It is illegal and most likely will not work. You need to buy a retail copy of windows 7, or if you can't afford the $100 right now you can download & install Linux.

Not illegal, just against terms of use and ownership. And it works just fine when u call Microsoft and give them the key on your coa, this however is frowned upon but since u have no support from Microsoft anyway they usually activate anyway.

The people above are almost incorrect, When your making a new computer and change the motherboard windows will not work. You must then reinstall the OS with your windows CD . The good thing about this is when you go to reinstall it will ask you where to install to . Select your hard drive and don't format. It will move all your old documents to C:windowsold :D. When windows asks you to activate , Simply put in your product key and off you go. Maybe it will ask you to call the toll free number . You give them a code from your screen they give you one to type and it will be activated! Make sure that you install some good antivirus. ( Avast or Microsoft Security essentials) along with malwarebytes Dont use Norton or Mcafee.

1st thing you are wrong. The activation servers record the cpu information to prevent using a key on multiple computers. Most likely if you can't activate online, you won't pass though the telephone activation.

2nd. Microsoft knows that there may be problems with corrupt OS. They set up a repair mode on the key on windows 7

They may record cpu info, but u can change cpus and windows will still work. a 40% hardware change however has almost always caused boot problems, especially if too many drivers are different. With a brand new build though, I always suggest a fresh install, that way u have no crap ware, viruses, orphan files and registry keys, unneeded drivers and settings.

your hard drive is trying to load the drivers for the old motherboard and setup. you wont get it to work like that.

you will have to reinstall windows on the new system so the needed drivers are installed. you will also probably have to buy a new license before you can reinstall, because Microsoft will have your license key for your other PC setup.

In short, from the other answers, your OS isn't corrupt, the manufacturer of that OS is.
