Connecting a Access Point

so i purchased a TL-WA500G 54M Wireless Access Point. so i thought it was going to be simple networking but i guess my skills aren't what they used to be. ok so heres the problem. it won't connect, obviously. i have it set up where my Linksys Router is in my basement and i have a cord going from my basement up to my room where i placed the Access Point. on my IPad it shows up it connects but it will not show the internet. can anyone help! am i missing something? i tried connecting to the Access Point to configue it. the booklet shows that there is a connecting IP address that you input and it should log you in but it doesn't. :(
